討論逐字稿: Embracing Oneness, Rejecting Otherness

Concluding Statements:
I already concluded. I said that everyone had different definition of self, and it's based on different experience, different family different background. And reflect that the difference between us, that's how we think of our self, and for instance, she thinks she can choose who she is, and I think I can't, I am the reflection of how others think of me. and the difference between us is the different background different childhood, etc.
Actually, I always said, it's too serious for 20 times. I know, but I couldn't figure out that what is the self, of my definition, because, myself is myself.
I think, therefore I am!
I think my simple brian has no definition of myself, but according to everyone's defintion, I got more definition of self.
Is it?
In the papers, you know, but maybe I have never entered into my mental brain. But maybe I think that self-worth, I can agree that self worth, we can prove ourself to do some contribution or prove our value to the real life, the real world. Maybe! So maybe we could keep discussing this next time. Thank you! next!
I agree, it is too complicated! Because it is complicated, so, I want to simplify it. I think that self just like a unique individual on the earth, just like an apple...
Do apples have selves?
...the difference is we have souls, more complicated brains, souls, we can be aware of ourselves, so we have a lot of mood or some problems, and questions, like, "who I am, who are you" and, how to conclude? I don't have to join the discussion next week.
Haha, you escape
You can keep your conclusion to next week.
So, don't think too much, sleep well.
Thank you! excellent.
Okay, next.
Oh, OMG. Well, it was nice having a philosophical class.
Just don't do it too often, right?
Because I never really had a philosophy class before. Now I'm even more confused of the definition than before.
So you can say, 'Thank you so much'! (sarcasm)
Next?
I think it's a realization process, it's just like, we talked about three levels of, in chinese we say, 看山是山,看山不是山,看山是山. And the first stage of mountain is mountain and the third stage is different already, But right now I'm in the second stabge. I thought I know myself, I thought I know what self is, but right now, i don't even know how to describe what self is. So, I'm looking forward to moving toward the third stage, and then I'll gain my wisdom. And hopefully I'll reach the third...
mountain!
…stage. because nobody knows maybe I will never reach that stage.
I just want to say thank you all, because I'm not any clearer than before but this was really fun.

3/23 Embracing Oneness, Rejecting Otherness

While I often agree with the premises of the articles I put forward for us to discuss,
I found this talk by Thandie Newton to be extremely challenging. I really want to discuss the ideas here from an investigative standpoint, examining it from all angles. So here are some questions, and some statements from the video to discuss.

討論逐字稿 In Defense of Introverts

Notes to the discussion In Defense of Introverts.

Concluding statements:

I think the whole society is quite extrovert-friendly. I think that's why introverted people will question themselves. Because introverted people are easily ignored in a group. They turns invisible to people. But I think people cannot be ignored for too long a time, and that's why introvert people question themselves. A lot.

When I found this video I was like, wow, finally someone understands me...

Yeah!
You were excited.

…because in the past, I always thought there must be something wrong, or, why, like I would try to force myself to be social, but it just wasn't me. So I think this lecture helped me understand that I am who I am, and also understand that there's lots of people like me. And I understood more of like, after a party, why I need so much time to recover, and discover that, hm, other people also do that and i didin't know that.

Hmmm. I think everyone have their own type.
World peace!

Yes, our society needs a lot of diversity. Everyone has their own style, just like the last question, about the political system, I think, it's interesting that, we always cannot imagine, which kind of people can win most people's trust. It's not, I don't think it's really true that the talkative person, or some certain type of person can win. Because it's a lot of factors, maybe people are very emotional, they will vote to the person they think he or she is charmiing, but what is charm really? I don't know what kind of person is attractive. So I just think, be yourself.

3/16 In Defense of Introverts

Today we're discussing some ideas from the TED talk by Susan Cain, "The Power of Introverts".
If you want to read more, there's a cute article in the Atlantic, called "Caring for your Introvert".

討論逐字稿 In Praise of Slowness

Concluding Statements:
I'm a slow woman, so I want to think slowly, and talk my conclusions slowly. I think good quick is a kind of physcial term we do things quckly and we save more time so we can do a lot of activity produce, finish a lot of work, produce a lot of prodcuts. It's a physcial term. But for our mind, or emotions, we need to slow down our pace, to refresh our bad emotion, and think deeply of our life. And then enjoy the true life. Yes, that's my thinking.

I really agree with this.

For me, I think speed is not a very big concern or question for me, because sometimes when I'm doing my work, I know my boss expects me to do things quckly, so I do things quickly. And when I have my own personal time, I can take my time, and relax and do things. And I think that my iPhone is a good friend, it is very convenient, and provides a lot of fun or me. But for the bad side, it really makes me have less time to think about myself, and maybe do some plan, or maybe think about things that happened today. It really make me become part of the 'head-down brigade'.

I think maybe I moved fast and talked fast once, but now I'm getting older, my movement, my thinking is becoming slower. But I've observed this evidence lately...

But you're learning a new job, we can't emphasize this enough!

...but I'm slo slow. I'm so nervous about this, I'm trying to catch up, work on everything...

But you're in a new culture, it's culture shock, really.

...so I'm trying to catch up this new environment, normally when I talk fast and react fast, it's not so good for me, because I seldom think what does that mean, and what's the beneift of that behavior, the think fast, talk fast eat fast, and I try to slow down my steps, and think more, but maybe not so much as Fanny, but I think about things more, and slow down my thinking and my steps. Yeah. Maybe I need more time to figure it out.

I really don't know what to say, I just think we have too many deadlines to meet, in our life. And too too many deadlines means to much pressure, too much pressure means sacrificing your relationship with your family, and your firends and yourself. I think we need to give each one of us their own space, and let them follow their own pace. Each one of us has their own pace, we don't need to follow others' speed. We need to give each other their distance.

討論逐字稿 Killing Us Softly

Closing statements:
I want to talk about something in the video, I watched it yesterday. In the video, she showed a lot of photoshopped pctures, and people working and reworking the model's bodies, to make them more beautiful. It shocked me really much, we recieve a lot of images, but they're not true! We think that models are born with those beatiful bodies and faces, but actually those models are just like us, normal people. But advertising changes the world to sell products and to sell some kind of image and change our concept, change our life.

I'm surprised that there are different images for different populations, for advertisement, women always have the smaller dogs, and the men always have bigger and strong dogs, like labrador, so the advertisement wants to give us the expectiation, or the idea that women should be more slim, or more soft, or something else, and men must be strong and powerful, and actually, I want to deny the concept, because even if the strengh of women is weaker than men, should we encourage this idea for everyone?

I don't agree that women are weaker than men. We have endurance strength.
And we can handle more than men.

I think we may be fooled by ads for a long time, but I think ads are not always bad, they create needs, it's how we create the economic world, it's how the money circulates, it's how our life gets better. But there comes the problem, is our life really better now? And comfort-wise, yeah, but i don't still don't know the answer.

For advertisement, as i know, it's for selling things and promoting things and persuading people to buy their products, but for these promotion strategies really affect our social value, and it also affects our value, affect the way we evaluate things. I also agree that advertisement treat men and women different, they create an unfair image for the women, but I think like other toxic things in our environment, we should find some ways to live with this kind of toxin. We should have our own opinion to choose what we should be and the way we want to live.

I think advertisement is business, and, it's like, buying things often you don't need, and it's encouraging people to buy things, and new things, and people forget what they really need, and the thing that they already have they actually can reuse. Because recently I'm reading a book about environment, it talks about advertisement and waste.

My question about advertising is, is there another way to do it without reducing people to stereotypes?
