7/15課堂筆記: What would our culture look like without the packaging?

When you look at the question, what images or ideas come to mind:
wrapping, too much plastic, boring, everything is covered with information, it's hard to figure out what's true and false. a culture without packaging would be more simple, pure and transparent.

what does food look like on television:
delicious shiny inviting want to buy it, attractive, shiny, light, large, smiles on everyone's faces. Juicy, fresh, just-cooked, tidy, colorful,
you can hear:
crunch, sizzle, ckch!, delicious sounds, pouring sounds, opening a soda

what do new apartment images look like:
expensive, unaffordable, luxurious, imagined pictures, strolling people hand in hand on the street, beautiful views of Danshui river, sunset, sunrise. it looks like it's the only building in the whole city. lots of trees. everyone looks happy. interiors looks like hotel. clean toilet. show you good feng shui.

images of new clothes or makeup:
perfect, flawless, they don't have any pores

difference between images and reality:
not so shiny, not so juicy, not so useful, they look normal, ordinary,

does that mean that once you own the thing, it's not that attractive anymore? It's more attractive when it's unobtainable.

it's unobtainably attractive in the ads. it can never be a talking barbie doll, the perfect juicy hamburger
the ads are our hopes and our dreams, show what we hope for,
i think that's why they're effective.

like car advertisements, show how functional they are, they can climb high mountains, but it's not like we need to climb high mountains every day.

reaction to job candidate:
too honest! you never say that! this reason is universal for leaving a job! if you actually said this, it would be a strategy to differentiate you from the group. it might backfire, esp if they call your old office to ask about you

reaction to: no liberals!
I would just leave, they're not open minded, conservative, it would keep us from wasting our time. it's common that certain people will be excluded. It's not common to say it.

reaction to company x:
at least it's trying to do something, compared to others who do much less. its better than nothing.
hypocrite!

tell people absolute truth?
as i get older, the frequency is less.
i tell friends mostly the truth, but never work contacts
most people like to hear beautiful words or white lie, so i reduce the number of times I tell the truth

present yourself as better?
interview!
if you dress nicer, people will trust you
dressing up shows respect.
it's common sense in financial field
it shows professionalism, helps customers trust you.

what is 'nicer' than you are, and what is 'your best self'?
saying you can finish an excel table in one hour when it's really two, that's saying you're better than you are
the tidy food may not be as delicious as the untidy food
so dressing up is an advertisement of yourself
what you wear, what bag you carry.

you use image to make people see who you are, and not who you're not.

so job interview dress is to show you're professional.

it's a kind of training for our environment.
if you wear high heels, or a suit, it's an image of professionalism.
it can be misleading, but you are trying to project an image

do we expect to be lied to in advertisements?
yes. experience.
does it mean we accept the situation?
I think so
to be lied to might happen when we shop.
but we're trained to see them as false. it's not a lie, because we know it's a lie.
it's supposed to be like that.

if we all think advertisements is a lie, why do we need advertisements
if it's a lie, how can it exist this long?
how can we accept so many lies in our world?
people accept that this is how it is.
it's not 100% lie. it's just 30%
what percentage of lie is a true lie?
the truth is not so attractive

it's commercial politics, you have to recommend your product, and make it more attractive, just like an interview! you have to make people believe you're better than you are.
why do we need this strategy?

companies don't really know what they want and don't want
so are you saying that people don't know what they want
are you saying they need to be persuaded by ads because otherwise they don't know.
people have to be told what they want?

in finance sector, our job is to tell lies. is this true in education sector?
actually school doesn't know what they want from teachers.
recruiting teachers is done wrong. they can't find the righ people, actually, there are no 'right' teachers. before, it was a secure job, not because they have a vocation for teaching, so right now, we have a lot of teachers like that.

so maybe it's the wrong advertisement to recruit those teachers.
gvt recruits soldiers by saying, you have a secure income, so you get people who chase security.
US army advertises, adventure, education, cool machinese
what you advertise for, you get.

is image becoming more important than how things are?
yes, image is more important

would you like to live in a world where appearances are less important?
yes
it would mean that people looked at you like a human being, not as the category you project

Is advertising absolutely indispensable in a capitalist economy?
absolutely yes
so is lying absolutely indispensable in a capitalist economy?
yes.

some people might think our life is more boring without packaging, but if we didn't have all that, we would go back to the basics. right now we live in all this superficial layers, but without the packaging, we could know more about what is real.

advertising is not naturally bad, it plays a role in our world to make our life more interesting, and help us earn money, and make our dreams come true in the advertisement world.
but relying too much on advertisement we will miss out on the basic and true thing in our life. but maybe it's hard to live without advertisement, it's hard to get along with each other, to find out what these people are. it's hard to figure out what is true, we dont have time to discern things so we just pick what looks good.

advertising has it's function. our modern society is a fast life-style, so we need to pick up the info very quickly, so ads provide the impression of this product, makes it easier to make a quick decision.
you can get information from ads, like about newest technology, so its a tool, maybe it is over-decorated, but it serves an important function.
