Where do you store food?
in the fridge
in a drawer
fruits and vegetables go in containers on the floor in the kitchen and everywhere
How to keep food fresh?
in my stomach.
this is not my work, that's my mom's job
only the fridge
sealing (bread, for example) in plastic boxes
sealing it in bags
putting it in a bowl on the counter and eating it on time,
put it where i can see it and eat it before it's bad
my mom wraps vegetables in newspaper in the fridge
cook larger portions and set some aside for later in the freezer
How's your kitchen?
very large! (lots of room for veggies on the floor)
small but still fits everything
do-able.
Garbage and recycling goes where?
on the balcony/laundry room
my mom puts the food we want to throw out in the fridge to wait for the garbage truck it's less stinky and no bugs. but it pollutes the fridge
my friend, who often works late, stores her food garbage like bones, in the freezer.
Do you buy too much at costco?
my father does. he likes that the fish has been pre-cut, that it's cut into pieces
we don't go, because my father doesn't like storing things a neat-freak
hypermarket
big box stores
warehouse stores
Do you buy too much at the traditional market?
no, because I have to carry the bags
yes, because it's so pretty!
supermarkets
yes! I buy chips
yes, to try new brands
no, I only eat certain kinds of cookies
bulk = a lot of volume
buying in bulk = buying a lot at one time
buying in bulk = buy wholesale批發
retail = 零售業
wholesale price = bulk-rate price = 批發價
actually traditional markets in taiwan already do sell things in bulk, you buy as much or as little as you want
also 30 years ago in taiwan most everything was sold like this. packaging is pretty new here.
waste
buy something you don't need
buy more than you need
garbage
things you don't need
throwing out things that are still good
spend more than you can afford = waste money
carelessly using things (like things are spilled)
inefficient = waste time, waste energy
making a lot of effort but no success = that was a total waste. :'(
someone doesn't return your affection
(so heartbreak is a waste?) (but you gain experience, so it's not a total waste)
zero waste:
recycle
waste is meaningful or useful
turn garbage into something useful
reduce =
use less
create less garbage
reuse =
use it more than once
use it over and over again
use is as many times as you can
recycle =
create new function
melting it down to re-make something of the same quality
downcycle = melt it down to make something of lesser quality
When people say: reduce, reuse, THEN recycle, what do they mean?
if you use less, then you have to spend less energy recycling or downcycling things.
Zero waste is not reasonable, but less waste is.
There's always going to be waste in the consuming and production process. It's hard to live in a zero waste environment or system.
there are few stores selling in bulk containers. Some do, but they need to be near our house, so you can buy things any time or any where. I'm busy, so I always eat outdoors, which creates garbage. Honestly, I think zero-waste is not reasonable.
My opinion is similar to hers. Zero waste is very idealized. it sounds like a gvt advertisement, to make people make less garbage and do good things for the earth. But maybe people will really reduce some waste, make less garbage, but the government always will spend some budget about this. and recycling costs people resource. So i think it's reasonable to do less waste, but there's almost no way to do zero waste.
I think we're all human beings. it's inhumane not to create garbage in our lives. Sometimes people just need to buy useless pretty stuff, or garbage food to find comfort in our busy life, so it's not possible to create zero waste environment. we can only encourage ourselves to create less garbage.
I totally agree with you guys! For example if someone is married, they will give you some cookies, if there was no packaging, it would be awful, because xibing have to be beautiful and well-decorated. So in normal life you can reduce packaging, I can bring my metal container to buy food, which I do all the time at home, it's healthy because of using less plastic, and no plastic chemicals in my food, it reduces garbage, this concept is good. But zero waste is hard to achieve.
